This article is about the real Ao Lie. You may be looking for another version. |
- Note: Due to Monkie Kid not being a direct representation to Journey to the West,[1] this article will be primarily about Ao Lie's appearance within Monkie Kid. For information about him in Journey to the West, click here.
Ao Lie, also known as the White Horse Dragon, was a member of the Dragon Clan and a pilgrim.
History
Past
Ao Lie was born as the son of Ao Ji, the Dragon of the West. At one point, he was captured by Kui Mulang, who attempted to steal the dragon's soul to live longer, fortunately he managed to fight him off and escape.[2]
Journey to the West
When Tang Sanzang and Monkey King were having an argument while crossing a bridge, Ao Lie encountered the two. Since then, he joined Tang Sanzang and Monkey King on their journey, occasionally taking on a form of a horse for the Great Monk.[3] One day, Ao Lie and the other pilgrims learned of the Samadhi Fire. The pilgrims, along with Ne Zha and the Demon Bull King, removed the fire from Red Son and placed them in the three Rings of Samadhi. But during the process of extracting the Samadhi Fire, a small fragment was transferred into Ao Lie instead of one of the rings.[4]
Legacy
During her time in the Scroll of Memory, Mei hoped on learning more about Ao Lie, the same way how the other Monkie Kids learned about their ancestors. When Mei was imprisoned by Kui Mulang, she met Ao Lie, albeit unaware about his identity at the time.
Personality
- “Ao Lie, the White Horse Dragon, was an exceptionally powerful being. But he was timid and nervous, lacking your confidence and borderline arrogance.”
- ―Master Subodhi [src]
Ao Lie was shown to be easygoing and friendly, despite that he can take action if needed.

Quotes
- “Ah. Another poor soul awaiting their fate at the hands of Kui Mulang.”
- ―Ao Lie
- “Oh, it's just... you know, you remind me of my sister. She, too, is impulsive.”
- ―Ao Lie
- “Why don't you just make a new sword?”
- ―Ao Lie
- “Did ya see? I-I just fell down and bonked my brain cage. Ow.”
- ―Ao Lie
- Mei: “Ugh, this guy. Forget it! I just assumed that you were in here 'cause that yellow-robed jerk wanted your powers too.”
- Ao Lie: “I'm sure he does. But all they've ever done is get me in trouble, so...”
- —Mei and Ao Lie
- “Beg your pardon? ”
- ―Ao Lie
- “Of course I do. But I can't protect them with careless actions.”
- ―Ao Lie
- “ And perhaps with greater caution, you would still have your sword. I know a thing or two about disappointing people, about feeling powerless to protect them, but I do not sense that you are a disappointment. Even now, locked away in imminent danger, your thoughts are to protect others.”
- ―Ao Lie
- “A sword is powerless without the hand that wields it.”
- ―Ao Lie
- “Oh, you know, just some wise sage stuff. Did you like it? I made it up myself. Like right now.”
- ―Ao Lie
- Mei: “Huh? W... Why didn't you do that sooner?”
- Ao Lie: “Because now seemed like the right time for action.”
- —Mei and Ao Lie
- “ I cannot hold him back much longer. Go. I will give you an opening. ”
- ―Ao Lie
- Mei: “Knew you were cool!”
- Ao Lie: “You really think so?”
- —Mei and Ao Lie
Behind the Scenes
- In Journey to the West, he is instead known as the White Dragon Horse, which was also used to name Mei's bike and jet.
- Ao Lie is never directly referred to by name in the novel, only being called the White Horse Dragon or Little White Dragon. The name Ao Lie originates from the TV drama "Journey to the West Sequel".
- His name in the show was previously used in Mei's official description on LEGO.com's campaign for Monkie Kid.[5]
- In the novel, Ao Lie accidentally set fire to his family's palace, destroying a pearl that was given to his family by the Jade Emperor. He was then sentenced to death, but was spared by Guanyin. She banished him to the Yingchou Stream (鷹愁澗), and told him to wait there until Tang Sanzang would arrive.[6] Ao Lie would later eat Tang Sanzang's horse.[7]
- In an earlier Zaju play version of Journey to the West, instead of being known as the "White Dragon Horse", he was called the "Fire Dragon Horse".[8]
- He is one of Sarah Harper's favorite characters. [9]

- ↑ Harper, Sarah (March 21, 2023). MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE new character from #monkiekid season 4, the adorable, clumsy, sweet and kind but unimaginably powerful White Horse Dragon, Ao Lie! It was fun to put our own spin on this character and figure out how he fit into the group dynamic of the LMKJTTW gang. Hope you guys loved him as much as we do!.
