“The universe is perilously close to tipping into chaos. If it comes to light that any of this party were involved, you can believe the consequences will be dire.”
— The First King[src]

The Court of the Underworld were a sacred configuration of Underworld Gods that ruled the Underworld.

History

Past

Centuries ago, the kings created the Scroll of Memory as a form of punishment for those trapped inside it, making them relive their past misdeeds as the scroll recorded every event that has ever occurred in all the realms. To make sure that the prisoners wouldn't break free from the scroll, they cast a protective curse.[1]

However, after thousands of years, the Nine-Headed Demon planning on having the world descend into chaos and destruction. To do so, they released Azure Lion from the Underworld and pilfered the Scroll of Memory, entrusting it to the demon. Exploiting Azure Lion's unwavering resolve, the Nine-Headed Demon orchestrated a plot to overthrow the Jade Emperor, fully aware that Azure would be ill-equipped to withstand the Yellow Color Stone, which as a result nearly tore the fabric of existence apart.[2]

Better Than We Found It

The First King had convened a meeting with the other rulers to inform them about an upcoming investigation into the theft of the Scroll of Memory and to discuss the course of action following the dethronement of the Jade Emperor. The First King emphasized the grave consequences that the universe would soon encounter due to the Pillar of Heaven being damaged. Furthermore, he warned that if any of them were found to be responsible for triggering these catastrophic events, they would face appropriate punishment. However, the head king acknowledged that compared to the impending doom that the universe would experience if the culprit succeeded, any punishment inflicted would be insignificant.

Collar the King

The ten kings suspected Monkey King, Macaque and MK were behind the theft of the Scroll of Memory and the root to the Jade Emperor's fall. The rulers summoned the suspects to confront them for their "crimes," and questioned their supposed guilt. Though MK attenpted to pledge their innocence, the monarchs were indifferent in the belief of their guilt. The mystic monkeys huddled to formulate an escape route, but the court had foreseen this move and assigned the new Celestial Host, Li Jing and Ne Zha to keep Monkey King at bay. Li Jing placed a circlet on the Monkey King's head, effectively controlling his actions. Li Jing then transported the trio to the Celestial Realm for incarceration.

The Cage

The Court of the Underworld arrived in the Temple of Nüwa to confront the Monkie Kids and their attempt to rebuild the Pillar of Heaven. Suddenly, the Tenth King spoke about MK's role as the Harbinger of Chaos. The First King, confused about the king's words, corrected him, stating that the Harbinger wouldn't awaken until another eon. The Tenth King finally revealed his identity as the Nine-Headed Demon and swiftly eliminated the other rulers gruesomely.

Trivia

  • The Kings draw inspiration from the Ten Courts of Yanluo in Chinese mythology. This connection is evident through the creation of the Scroll of Memory, which serves as a means to punish prisoners for their wrongdoings, mirroring the punishment of those for their crimes in the Ten Courts of Yanluo after their demise.
