“You almost had the Sandy, but you were too weak to be who you truly are. I am a monster. That's what the world wants me to be, so that's what I'm gonna give 'em.” |
— Sha Wujing[src] |
Sha Wujing was one of Tang Sanzang's three disciples and the previous guardian of the Flowing Sands River.
History[]
Past[]
Sha Wujing was a demon that served the Heavens as an agent of the Celestial Realm, being gifted a Crescent Staff.[2] But he was sent to the Mortal Realm and became the guardian of the Flowing Sands River.[3] Because he was a demon, he was judged unfairly by others, leading to him to grow a sense of rage and become a fierce warrior, killing those who enter his domain to fight him.[4]
Journey to the West[]
Sha Wujing got into a battle with the pilgrims as they crossed the Flowing Sands River, but later joined them on their journey, bestowing a silver circlet as he became Tang Sanzang's disciple.[5] One day, Sha Wujing and the others learned of the Samadhi Fire. And along with Ne Zha and the Demon Bull King, they removed the fire from Red Son and placed it in the three Rings of Samadhi. Not knowing about Monkey King's mistake, Sha Wujing and Zha Bajie congratulated Tang Sanzang for succeeding once the ritual was over.[6]
Legacy[]
Just like the other pilgrims, Monkey King ensured that Sha Wujing's legacy lived on. He had Sha Wujing and the other Great Companions portrayed on a mural in the Shuilian Cave. Additionally, Monkey King developed a video game featuring Sha Wujing during his time as the Guardian of the Flowing Sands River. During Sandy's imprisonment in the Scroll of Memory, his subconscious was confined within Sha Wujing's body. When Pigsy attempted to talk sense into Sha Wujing in hopes of freeing Sandy, he reminded Sandy that he did not have to act like a demon simply because he was related to Sha Wujing.
Personality[]
Before he was reformed, Sha Wujing was mistreated by others due to the fact that he was a demon. This caused him to be belligerent and developed a thirst for fighting, challenging those who claimed to be a warrior in a fight to the death.[4]
