Harbinger is the tenth episode of Season 5 and the fifty-eighth episode overall of Monkie Kid.
Synopsis[]
Short DescriptionAmid the chaos beyond the world, Monkie Kid encounters the goddess Nüwa and uncovers a secret so devastating it could alter everything.[1] |
Plot[]
The Monkie Kids grieve for MK. In contrast, the Nine-Headed Demon is thrilled at the prospect of returning to his own realm. Meanwhile, a heartbroken Monkey King takes his frustration out by pounding the ground. He notices the circlet on him has withered, feeling regretful that there might have been another option.
In the Chaos Beyond, MK felt heartbroken by Nüwa's decision to conclude the Great Cycle, especially when it seemed like everyone was on the verge of understanding their situation. Nüwa explained that without the guardians, no one could control the Color Stones to maintain the Pillar of Heaven. MK believed this had to signify something more than just an end. Nüwa reluctantly stated that she had no choice but to conclude the current cycle due to the universe's fragile state. She reassured MK that everything would be restored in the next cycle, thanks to their sacrifices. Nüwa emphasized that creating the Pillar of Heaven and the Great Cycles was her way of protecting humanity. MK countered that humanity was not weak, leading the energy of the Color Stones to swirl around him. Nüwa insisted this was their destiny and the only path forward, but MK argued that the decision shouldn't fall solely on them, believing humanity would always choose to fight. Nüwa warned MK, calling him a mere mortal, that returning would unleash chaos, leading to the universe's destruction. MK acknowledged that pain is part of life but claimed they were the masters of their fate. Nüwa insisted that MK's sacrifice was his destiny as the Harbinger of Chaos, but MK rejected this, declaring himself the Monkie Kid.
Transforming into his monkey form, MK emerged from the Pillar of Heaven, attempting to use the stones to bend the pillar. Initially, his efforts seemed successful, but soon the structure began to crack. As MK exerted more force, the energy from the purple Color Stone surged, resulting in a powerful explosion. Monkey King, noticing the commotion, realized that MK was still alive and rushed to his aid. MKapologized, but Monkey King reassured him that such matters were not important. The Monkie Kids gathered around MK in an embrace, while Ne Zha, Li Jing, and Macaque watched from a distance. Li Jing pointed out the Pillar's irreparable damage, feeling hopeless about the situation. Despite this, MK remained optimistic, believing he could still make things right, though the others began to accept the harsh reality of their impending fate. The Monkie Kids and Monkey King joined hands in solidarity. Li Jing turned to Ne Zha, feeling proud of him but regretting that he didn't have enough time to share more. Meanwhile, Monkey King extended his hand to Macaque, who hesitated but was on the verge of accepting when the Nine-Headed Demon, in a weakened state, suddenly appeared. The demon relished the thought of witnessing the end of the Great Cycle alongside everyone present. Macaque expressed concern for the demon's condition, but the Nine-Headed Demon reminded him that even if the universe were to collapse, he would still have a way back to his own world. The Nine-Headed Demon recognized MK's choice to defy his predetermined fate by standing with his friends rather than giving in to despair. He emphasized the importance of the word "together," which sparked an idea in MK's mind. The Nine-Headed Demon acknowledged MK's efforts but was skeptical when MK suggested they could work together to restore the Pillar of Heaven, echoing Mei's belief in their collective strength. MK then distributed Color Stones to his friends: the yellow one went to Monkey King, the green to Mei, the red to Tang, the blue to Sandy, and the purple to Pigsy. The Nine-Headed Demon dismissed this plan as impossible, claiming he would have already accomplished it if it were feasible. However, Macaque supported MK's vision, leading Monkey King to realize that the statement encompassed everyone in the universe, not just their group. Ignoring the Nine-Headed Demon's objections, the Monkie Kids and the Monkey King shattered the Color Stones, causing their energy to spread across nearly all beings, which ultimately restored the universe and the Pillar of Heaven. MK asserted that they could embody the new Pillar of Heaven and unite as one. As the Nine-Headed Demon witnessed his body restore, he was filled with dread, fearing entrapment in the Mortal Realm. In a desperate move, he pushed MK back into the Pillar of Heaven, following him into the chaotic void beyond. There, the Nine-Headed Demon praised MK for discovering another solution, something that he had long abandoned. Gazing into the swirling chaos, he admitted to MK that he had been missing for a significant time. When MK asked about the implications of this absence, the Nine-Headed Demon revealed that it indicated an unknown enemy was gaining the upper hand. Upon MK's question about the enemy's identity, the Nine-Headed Demon simply wished him luck, hinting that MK's actions had unleashed unforeseen consequences. Before returning MK to his realm, the Nine-Headed Demon thanked MK for everything.
At Pigsy's Noodles, the Monkie Kids were taken aback by the unexpected outcome of sharing the Color Stones' energy to everyone, which granted them extraordinary abilities. This revelation contradicted Tang's assumption that everything had returned to normal. On the rooftop, MK shared with Monkey King the significant changes that had occurred, challenging MK's wish for things to remain unchanged. Monkey King pointed out that regardless of whether the situation improved or worsened, it was MK's actions that led the team to discover the truth. MK also mentioned that the Nine-Headed Demon had indicated he had unleashed something by "opening the cage." In response, Monkey King reminded MK of the latter's saying about being provoked. Monkey King was thankful for MK's return and shared his fear of losing him, which brought MK to tears. Monkey King comforted MK, promising they would face any challenges together.
At his training temple, Red Son was teaching Mei how to control the Samadhi Fire effectively. Meanwhile, in the Underworld, Macaque discovered that his shadow abilities were now infused with a chaotic energy. Over at Pigsy's Noodles, Pigsy added a new photo of himself and MK to his collection. In the Celestial Realm, Ne Zha took the lead in directing the Celestial Warriors to start the rebuilding process, which made Li Jing smile with approval. At Flower Fruit Mountain, Monkey King surprised MK by bringing him to a party organized by the Monkie Kids, Red Son, and Macaque, where they enjoyed a fireworks display. However, Macaque noticed that the Golden Staff carried chaotic energy.

Trivia[]
- When Nüwa circles around MK, it resembles an ouroboros. This may represent the repeating nature of the cycle.
- The ending mirrors that of "Destiny Fulfilled", showcasing character montages with Tang narrating a crucial lesson. Furthermore, both narrations conclude with Tang reflecting on the success of his storytelling, followed by an ominous focus on a magical object.
- Flying Bark Productions is referenced through a flying dog appearing at the end.
- Said dog is modeled after writer David Breen's dog, Tiger.[2]
- When the Color Stones are broken, their released powers are explicitly shown to be tied to some specific living beings.
- The Yellow Stone, broken by the Monkey King, ties to the stall owner at the White Tiger and Teal Dragon Festival, the Pink-haired girl, and Macaque.
- The Green Stone, broken by Mei, ties to Red Son, Jin, Yin, the Demon Bull King, the Attendant at the Dragon Palace of the East Sea, the aforementioned dog, and Ne Zha.
- The Purple Stone, broken by Pigsy, ties to Chang'e, the little girl, and Li Jing.
- The Blue Stone, broken by Sandy, ties to Princess Iron Fan and some birds, perhaps meant to be the ones from "To Catch a Leaf".
- The Red Stone, broken by Tang, ties to an Elite Celestial Guard.
