Master (sometimes called Shifu) Subodhi is a martial arts master and Monkey King's first mentor.

History[]

Past[]

Shifu Subodhi became a martial arts master at the Temple of the Tilted Moon and Three Stars, where he trained his students, including Monkey King, to become sages as they were bestowed supernatural powers. At one point, he secluded himself in the temple for 50 years.[1]

Show Me the Monster[]

Upon infiltrating Master Subodhi's domain, MK felt a surge of anticipation to finally encounter him. MK was aware that the forthcoming inquiry might seem illogical. However, before MK could proceed, Shifu Subodhi acknowledged MK's needs and questioned if MK comprehended them himself.

Despite only being a memory, Master Subodhi claimed to be aware of MK since he possessed an extensive knowledge about almost everything. MK wasted no time in requesting the assistance of Master Subodhi to find Monkey King, rescue his friends, and break the protective curse. However, Master Subodhi cautioned MK, revealing that the situation was far more complex than it appeared, and that there was something of great significance concerning MK himself, rather than Monkey King. Despite MK's insistence that he was merely a humble noodle delivery boy, Master Subodhi disagreed, pointing out the remarkable power that MK possessed. In order to delve deeper into the matter, Master Subodhi inquired about MK's childhood and parents, a topic that MK was initially hesitant to discuss. Nevertheless, a memory of Pigsy and Monkey King's stone prompted MK to implore Master Subodhi to take him to Flower Fruit Mountain. Because he asked nicely, Master Subodhi agreed to take MK to Flower Fruit Mountain. Upon their arrival, MK was confused to Monkey King's absence.

Master Subodhi explained that while the stone was initially used to create Monkey King, MK gradually emerged from the same stone over a period of time. Master Subodhi emphasized that MK played a significant role in his stories and there was a specific reason why he possessed Monkey King's powers. However, Master Subodhi clarified that MK's birth differed from that of Monkey King. Due to this distinction, Master Subodhi admitted uncertainty regarding MK's true identity, but he firmly believed that fate had grand plans for him, regardless of whether they lean toward goodness or evil. MK was taken aback by this revelation and struggled to accept the notion that he could hold such importance. However, Master Subodhi assured him that this was indeed the case, and MK's journey was only just commencing. Just as this realization sunk in, the protective curse descended upon them, causing Master Subodhi's form to dissolve away into ink.

Roast of the Monkie Kids[]

As Master Subodhi began to train the Monkie Kids, Mei was eager to learn kung fu skills. However, Master Subodhi hit her on the head, reminding her to stay focused. Master Subodhi advised Mei not to be distracted by the actions of his students and emphasized the importance of concentrating on the task at hand. Tang offered Mei a bowl of noodles, suggesting that it might help her concentrate. However, his well-intentioned gesture was met with the same bonk on the head from Master Subodhi. Master Subodhi scolded Tang for indulging in their limited food supplies, reminding him that their rations should be conserved. Tang apologized and explained that his stress levels have been high due to the escalating threat of Azure Lion. Master Subodhi acknowledged the team's emotional state but advised him against being overwhelmed by their feelings. He reminded the Monkie Kids that in the past, they had relied on their strength and luck to overcome challenges. However, it would not be enough to fight the Brotherhood. He statted that he does not usually extend his training to ordinary mortals, but the universe depended on them. Master Subodhi criticized Mei for being impulsive while describing Tang as a coward with thin ankles. Pigsy was labeled as stubborn, but Sandy was praised as delightful and studious, receiving a star. Master Subodhi concludes by stating that the Monkie Kids themselves are the only obstacles they need to overcome.

Speaking with Tang in private, Master Subodhi disagreed with Tang's concern about lacking self-confidence, pointing out that the real issue was Tang's complete lack of skill. Master Subodhi continued to explain that although Tang had occasionally tapped into his powers and achieved great feats by luck, this was not a reliable method. He criticized Tang for being lazy, constantly whining and complaining, and not putting in the necessary practice to improve his skills. Master Subodhi then mentioned Tang Sanzang, who was known for his studious nature and mastery of the mystical arts. Tang questioned the purpose of having all this power if he couldn't use it to help his friends. In response, Master Subodhi explained that just like the Monkie Kids, the original pilgrims developed by their journey. It took Tang Sanzang a long time to realize that friendship itself holds its own power, something that Tang had already learned. As a symbol of this understanding, Master Subodhi gave Tang a star. Finally, Master Subodhi emphasized that if Tang wanted to reach the same level of skill as Tang Sanzang, he needed to dedicate himself to studying rather than luck.

Master Subodhi attended to Mei in the training grounds, where he observed her fighting with his students. He began by acknowledging the exceptional power of Ao Lie, but also pointed out his timid and nervous nature, highlighting the contrast with Mei's confidence and arrogance. Mei interrupted with a defensive response. However, Master Subodhi used this as an opportunity to explain a valuable lesson. He reminded Mei that just like the flame that lights a candle can also ignite a forest fire, her potential goes beyond what she currently realized. He emphasized the importance of slowing down and thinking before taking action, as Ao Lie did, in order to harness tremendous power. Mei claimed to have already learned these lessons. Master Subodhi was skeptical and turned to leave. Mei asked about her star, to which Master Subodhi replied that she would receive it when she had earned it.

Master Subodhi praised Sandy, acknowledging that there was nothing more for him to learn and rewarded him with another star. However, Master Subodhi also pointed out that Sandy's kindness was a disadvantage for him.

As Master Subodhi approached Pigsy, the latter was quick to dismiss any attempts at being taught. However, Master Subodhi drawed a comparison between Pigsy and Zhu Bajie. Master Subodhi acknowledged that Zhu Bajie had his flaws, but he also recognized his growth and transformation. In a similar vein, Master Subodhi believed that Pigsy possessed immense kindness and untapped potential, urging him to explore his true power. Master Subodhi then advised the Monkie Kids to break free from their self-imposed limitations in order to become unstoppable warriors. He emphasized that the universe would require their strength sooner than expected.

The Jade Emperor[]

Master Subodhi was meditating with the Monkie Kids as the second assault on the Celestial Realm went on. Seeing Mei go off, he told her and the rest that they haven't completed their training yet, warning them that they would end up getting killed in the battle if they go. He then gave Sandy a star sticker as the latter mentioned that they can stand a chance against the Brotherhood because of their training. As the Master watched the Monkie Kids leave, the Acolyte asked him if the four were done for, to which Master Subodhi agreed without any hesitation.

Better Than We Found It[]

Master Subodhi stood witness to the universe tearing apart. However, Azure started to reverse the destruction, leaving Master Subodhi bewildered by the turn of events.

Quotes[]

I know exactly what you need to know, MK the Monkie Kid. The questions is, do you?
―Master Subodhi
I am the Great Master Subodhi. There is little I do not know.
―Master Subodhi
Stand straight and hush your tongue! You talk too much! This is not about the Monkey King. There is something more at play here. Something about you.
―Master Subodhi to MK
Do you even believe that? The students I train spend lifetimes to possess a fraction of your power. Am I to believe Sun Wukong is the greatest master in history?
―Master Subodhi
Wrong! I am the greatest master in all of history. However, even I admit my mentorship is not the sole reason for Sun Wukong's absurdly fast learning, just as his is not reason for yours.
―Master Subodhi
Very well. But only because you said please.
―Master Subodhi
I have not brought you to your master. Although this was the stone from which Sun Wukong once sprung, it appears, over time, it was used to form another. A simple creature with no past, no family, and no name. There is a reason you are at the center of these stories. A reason you can harness the power of the Monkey King himself.
―Master Subodhi
Without question, you were not born from the stone as he was. Who or what you are, even I do not know the answer. But of one thing I am certain. Fate has plans for you. Great plans or foul? Time will tell.
―Master Subodhi
Your journey is just beginning...
