Past[]

Birth and early life[]
A very, very long time ago, the Monkey King was born from a magic stone at the top of Flower Fruit Mountain. After being born, Monkey King befriended the monkeys from the mountain, after jumping into the Shuilian Cave, he received the title of the Monkey King[2] and lived with his fellow monkeys .[3] He went to Chang'an, wearing plants as clothes and claiming to be the Monkey King, as he can speak like that of an average human. Monkey King would later be trained by Master Subodhi at the Temple of the Tilted Moon and Three Stars, learning his 72 Transformations and gaining the ability to summon a magic cloud.[4] In hopes of finding a weapon, Monkey King traveled to the East Sea and took the Golden Staff from the Dragon of the East, which was originally a pillar in the palace.[5] When the Court of the Underworld summoned Monkey King in the Underworld, he crossed out his name from the Book of the Dead.[6][2] Monkey King also befriended the Six-Eared Macaque, who also lived on Flower Fruit Mountain.
Havoc in Heaven[]

As Monkey King soon started to fear mortality, and wanted to protect the people he cared about, he started to look for ways to become immortal, eventually forgetting the main reason why he was doing it.[7] When Sun Wukong traveled to the Celestial Realm, he was assigned as a stable boy, finding the cleaning of pony stalls an act of insult, he was lashed at the Jade Emperor.[8] Because of this, he was appointed as the warden of the Peaches of Immortality from the Heavenly Orchard, but decided to steal and eat the peaches instead.[9][2] Monkey King also stole Lao Tzu's pills[10] Ultimately he was thrown in the Trigram Furnace but escaped relatively unharmed, as well as gaining his Golden Eyes of Truth during the process.[10] As Monkey King continued to cause chaos and annoy people in the Celestial Realm, he created his title the "Great Sage, Equal to Heaven", and he faced off against the Third Lotus Prince Ne Zha, who was tasked to capture him by the Jade Emperor.[11] At some point, he even picked a fight with Buddha.[9]

Monkey King's actions in the Celestial Realm and the way he acted towards the monkeys at his mountain were admired by the Azure Lion, who became sworn brothers with him along with the Demon Bull King, Six-Eared Macaque, Golden-Winged Peng, and Yellowtusk the Wise. Monkey King invited them all for a feast at Flower Fruit Mountain as he told them about his time in the Celestial Realm. Macaque tried to warn Monkey King not to take it any further, but the latter ignored him as he continued to mock the ruler. Monkey King and the demons then discuss who should take the Jade Emperor's place if they overthrow him. The demons suggested that the position should be for Azure Lion, but the latter denied it, proposing it to Monkey King.[8]

The Brotherhood fought to dethrone the Jade Emperor, but during the assault on the Celestial Realm, Monkey King tried to defeat the Jade Emperor, but failed, forcing him to surrender.
He would later be sealed under Five Phases Mountain, where he lashed at Macaque when he came to give him a peach instead of finding a way to free him. He then accused Macaque of always leaving him behind when he began to leave. This led to an argument between the two monkeys as Monkey King was called out for his ego, and not listening to his friend's warnings.[7] Eventually, he would be freed and become a disciple for Tang Sanzang to atone for his past sins, devastating his sworn brothers.[12]
Journey to the West[]

When Monkey King became Tang Sanzang's first disciple, he received a circlet, which would severely harm him if its spell would be activated.[13] When the two crossed a river's bridge, they encountered Ao Lie, who briefly attacked them before joining their journey to repent his past mistakes.[14] Eventually Zhu Bajie joined them along with Sha Wujing, who got in a battle with the latter and Monkey King before joining them.[15] The Pilgrims traveled to the West to deliver sacred texts, as Monkey King protected Tang Sanzang from certain demons that intended to eat the monk so they could become immortal.[15]

During their journey, Monkey King and the pilgrims discovered the Samadhi Fire, which was unintentionally created by Red Son when he was born. As a way to seal the fire, the pilgrims, Ne Zha, and the Demon Bull King performed a ritual to would seal the flame in three rings. Monkey King, however, accidentally let a fragment of the flame slip, letting it hit Ao Lie.[16]

After the rings were created, Monkey King hid the Orange Ring of Samadhi by throwing it into the crust of the Earth. But the ring was discovered by some villagers, believing that the ring was a gift for them.[17] Monkey King would in time engage in a battle with Macaque, who grew bitter towards him after he believed that Monkey King forgot about him, the battle ultimately ended with Macaque killed by his former friend, but the deceased monkey would be saved by a demon unknowingly to Wukong at that time.

Eventually, the pilgrims came across Lady Bone Demon, who planned to have a world free from pain and imperfection. But because the situation only involved the mortal realm at first, Monkey King was able to defeat her. Monkey King planned on destroying the Bone Demon, but Tang Sanzang instead had the demon imprisoned in a tomb until she could change.[18] The Monkey King along with the other pilgrims were tasked by the Celestial Realm to destroy Camel Ridge, and get rid of the Azure Lion, Peng and Yellowtusk (which was for a reason that Camel Ridge took all the energy around it, making it a wasteland), Monkey King used the Scroll of Memory to imprison the demons.[12]
At some point, the Monkey King fought against several demons such as the Demon Bull King, his wife Princess Iron Fan, the Gold and Silver Demons, and the Spider Queen.[3]
Demon Bull King's imprisonment[]

Eventually, the Demon Bull King arose from the Underworld to wreak havoc on the world with his terrible power and laid waste to an unfortunate village. When it seemed that no one could stop him, the Monkey King appeared from nowhere and challenged him. Armed with his Golden Staff, the Monkey King engaged the Demon Bull King in intense combat, with the battle being nearly one-sided in the Monkey King's favor. At the climax of the fight, the Monkey King cut the top of a nearby mountain with his staff and used it to seal the Demon Bull King forever, leaving his staff on top of it to avoid anyone from freeing him.[3]
Afterwards, the Monkey King vanished without a trace and wasn't seen for centuries.[3]
Monkie Kid: A Hero is Born[]

Five hundred years later, the Monkey King would spy on MK, taking a liking to his future successor. Eventually, the Demon Bull King was released from the Netherworld thanks to the aid of his wife, Princess Iron Fan, his son, Red Son of the Demon Bull Family and the Bull Clones. The Demon Bull King's return attracts the attention of MK, who had acquired the Monkey King's staff, and his friends, and they set out to Flower Fruit Mountain to find the Monkey King for help, not knowing that he was spying them.

After a run-in with Princess Iron Fan, and losing the staff to her in the fight, MK is separated from his friends but ends up at Flower Fruit Mountain. The Monkey King then encounters MK, telling him that he is fully aware that his staff was taken. Taking a liking to MK, he tells that he is perfect to be his successor, noting how he is the only one who can wield his staff. He tells MK to believe in himself before MK sets out to confront the Demon Bull King and retrieve the Gold Staff.
After MK and his allies defeat the Demon Bull Family, the Monkey King stood on top of the Monkey Mech's head, nodding in respect and acknowledge of his newfound successor as protector of the world.
Season 1[]
Bad Weather[]

After MK failed to stop Red Son, Monkey King meets him to see how he's doing. MK reached out to Monkey King for assistance. However, Monkey King interrupted, explaining that it was no longer his duty to battle against villains. Monkey King also mentioned that MK was invincible. Despite this, MK admitted that he always managed to worsen situations and sensed that something was amiss. Concerned for MK, Monkey King jumped onto MK's shoulders and pointed out that the root of the problem lies in MK's lack of self-confidence. MK tried to defend himself, asserting that he possessed an abundance of self-confidence. However, Monkey King disagreed, stating that MK was merely loud and that true self-confidence was derived from practice and perseverance. Monkey King shared his own journey of training and battling demons for centuries to attain his current level of power. Understanding the weight of his responsibilities to his friends and Megapolis, MK mentioned his worries. Reluctantly, Monkey King offered MK a solution to address his lack of control over his powers. This solution involves limiting MK's abilities, which would result in him no longer being invincible. Despite his reservations, MK agreed to this proposition. Monkey King proceeded to restrict MK's powers, and within moments, took him back to the Weather Station, with Monkey King assuming his bird form.
The Great Wall Race[]
While MK, Mei, and the Demon Bull Family were competing in the Great Wall Race, Monkey King was at Flower Fruit Mountain, eating a peach, which was what the competitors raced for in the first place.
Impossible Delivery[]

After the Monkey King was able to beat MK during training, he tells MK that he's getting better and that they just need to work on his focus, but MK disagreed. When MK disagreed, the Monkey King tries to give him advice on focusing, but then tells MK that he can't handle real focus if he thinks that the advice doesn't make sense. Sometime after MK left, the Monkey King decided to order noodles from Pigsy's Noodles.

When MK was able to deliver the noodles to an ancient temple, he realized that Monkey King was the one who delivered the noodles and thought it was because he wanted him to learn a lesson about focusing. But was shocked to learn that he actually delivered the wrong noodles to the Monkey King.

Sleep Bug[]

To concoct an excuse for his absence during his quest to find a solution to defeat Lady Bone Demon, Monkey King had to resort to deceiving MK by claiming that he was leaving Flower Fruit Mountain for a vacation. However, MK expressed concern about Monkey King's departure, fearing that Megapolis might be left vulnerable to attacks or the potential return of the Spider Queen. Monkey King reassured MK, finding his apprehension endearing. He firmly believed that MK had grown and developed enough to handle any challenges that may arise in his absence. Monkey King encouraged MK to embrace the next phase of his journey, which he must undertake alone. Despite the prospect of being on his own, Monkey King promised to stay connected and provide support through training tools and remote lessons. He believed that everything would work out and had unwavering faith in MK's abilities. With a final farewell, Monkey King gracefully departed on his magic cloud, embarking on his quest to find the means to defeat Lady Bone Demon.
Dumpling Destruction[]

The Monkey King set out on a journey to the Celestial Realm in search of information about the Lady Bone Demon. However, his plans took an unexpected turn when he became entangled in a fierce battle with the Giant Gods. Amidst the chaos, a Celestial Dumpling was accidentally knocked over, triggering a series of events that would ultimately lead to a collision course with Megapolis. Monkey King used astral projection, allowing him to communicate with MK. Monkey King advised MK to prevent the Celestial Dumpling from causing destruction to Earth. MK was uncertain about how to stop it, but Monkey King had faith in his intelligence to handle the situation. Additionally, he mentioned having something in Flower Fruit Mountain that could be used to defeat the dumpling. Lastly, before concluding the conversation, Monkey King encouraged MK to have confidence in himself. Monkey King redirected his attention towards the Giant Gods, refocusing on the matter concerning Lady Bone Demon. Additionally, he cautioned them against repeating the mistake of dropping any food.
Pig Pong Panic[]
Monkey King received a unique shipment of Fruit Babies from an unknown sender. Due to his unavailability, he assigned MK the responsibility of guarding it. Because of the possibility of MK opening the package against his instructions, Monkey King provided him with a training blindfold, which would serve as a tool for honing MK's listening skills.
Minor Scale[]

In the Bone Demon Temple, Monkey King tried to avoid being crushed by a spiked trap. Suddenly, MK contacted Monkey King through astral projection. Monkey King acknowledges Monkie Kid's achievement and asks about his progress with astral projection. MK eagerly asked about Monkey King's vacation and well-being. However, Monkey King interrupted him, stating that it was not the best time for a conversation. MK understood and explained that he was concerned because he hadn't heard from Monkey King in a while and mentioned his training. Monkey King explained to MK that he needed to continue working on his own and emphasized the importance of trusting his instincts. He suggested that MK should consider shrinking the Golden Staff as part of his training. MK quickly demonstrated his ability to shrink the staff, annoying Monkey King. Monkey King challenged MK to shrink himself as well, but MK was confused about how to learn that skill. Monkey King encouraged him to figure it out and advised him to think little. Not able to lift the trap for much longer, Monkey King lied that his masseuse had arrived and abruptly ended the call. Monkey King stood in front of a mural of Lady Bone Demon and became suspicious. He decided to investigate further and punched the mural, shattering it.
On the Run (flashback)[]

Monkey King went back to the Celestial Realm to claim the Map to the Rings of Samadhi, evading Ne Zha's relentless attacks. As he spotted the map, he attempted to seize it, only to be thwarted by a powerful barrier that pushed him back.Monkey King realized he should have anticipated such an obstacle. Ne Zha, confident in the seal's ability to safeguard the map from any potential thieves, questions his intentions. Monkey King playfully remarked on Ne Zha's lack of fun, but his efforts were quickly halted as Ne Zha prevents him from reaching the map. Ne Zha asserted that it was his sole responsibility to protect the map, emphasizing the importance of his oath to safeguard the world from the Samadhi Fire. Monkey King, however, countered by explaining that a greater threat has emerged. Despite Ne Zha's dedication to his security duty, Monkey King highlighed the dilemma they face - he requires the map, while Ne Zha insists on its preservation. As Monkey King made his case, he duplicates of himself, who restrained Ne Zha. Monkey King acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, with both parties having conflicting desires regarding the map's fate. Ne Zha pleaded with Monkey King, urging him not to force his way through the barrier, as doing so could result in their destruction. Monkey King, aware of the risks involved, acknowledged Ne Zha's concern but remains determined to obtain the map, likening it to the necessity to make sacrifices. Monkey King forcefully broke through the barrier, successfully acquiring the map but causing the destruction of the Temple of Ne Zha and injuring himself severely. Monkey King motivated Ne Zha to keep practicing, playfully suggesting that Ne Zha might one day be able to defeat him. However, Monkey King's focus shifted when he sensed MK was in danger, prompting him to leave and rescue him.
This is the End![]

Monkey King arrived to stop the Lady Bone Demon just as she was about to defeat MK, but was too late as MK already lost his power and the Golden Staff was in the Bone Demon's possession. Lady Bone Demon told Monkey King that destiny cannot be changed, but the latter denied this, saying that it can. Monkey King then took MK far away as Lady Bone Demon destroyed the Golden Staff and began her plan to destroy the world.

After the two met up with the others, a distraught MK told Monkey King that they could've done something. Monkey King, however, replied that they couldn't have done anything to stop Lady Bone Demon. Angered, Pigsy got mad at Monkey King for not being there for MK before Sandy yelled at everyone to stop, saying that Monkey King should tell them why he left. Monkey King explained that the real reason he left was because he was looking for a weapon that could defeat the Lady Bone Demon. Despite not accepting MK's offer for him and his team to join at first, Monkey King let the others join him on a quest to stop Lady Bone Demon.

Great Grand Dragon of the East[]
As the Team Dronecopter continued to sink deeper into the ocean, MK pleaded with Monkey King to take action. Monkey King, being immortal, questioned why he should intervene, until he remembered that Monkie Kids are mere mortals. Suddenly, the Dragon Turtle submarine emerged, and Monkey King realized that the Dragon of the East had came to their rescue. He refers to the dragon as a friend, although he later doubted the sincerity of that label. Monkey King and the Monkie Kids were guided to the Dragon Palace of the East Sea. Monkey King confessed that he had stolen the Golden Staff from this very palace. Just as the Dragon of the East arrived, Monkey King attempted to greet him, but was immediately accused of returning to the dragon's home after stealing the staff. Monkey King tried to explain that it was all a misunderstanding, but the furious Dragon of the East interrupted him, enraged by the news that the Lady Bone Demon now possessed the staff. Despite the Monkie Kids starting to question, Monkey King stayed confident. He reminded the Dragon of the East about who he was, but before he could say more, the Dragon of the East cautioned him against attempting to deceive him once more. Mei's possession of the Dragon Blade changed the Dragon of the East's plan to execute everyone. Instead, he took the map and sent Monkey King and the Monkie Kids to the dungeons, while Mei was escorted to the palace. Through telepathic communication, Monkey King instructed Mei to retrieve the map.
Monkey King and the others were thrown into the dungeons, where they waited while Pigsy attempted to dig an escape route with a spoon. Eventually, Mei and Sandy managed to create a hole in their cell using the T.E.A. to crash into it. They quickly boarded the T.E.A. and attempted to flee from the palace, only to be confronted by the Dragon of the East. Monkey King explained that they need to acquire the Samadhi Fire in order to defeat Lady Bone Demon. Suddenly, Monkey King and the Dragon of the East sensed Macaque's presence. Monkey King warned that if Macaque got hold of the map as he captured them, they will truly be defeated. The Dragon of the East decided to confront Macaque while the others continued on their quest.
Smartie Kid[]
In an effort to gain a deeper understanding of his own psyche, Monkey King turned to the practice of mystic meditation. He explained to MK that the practice not only allowed him to introspect, but also aided in his recovery from his battle with Ne Zha. Furthermore, he instructed MK to wake him up from his meditative state after a century had passed. During his meditation, Monkey King was wagered by MK, who participated in the Goldfish Demon's game show so he could win an engine for the T.E.A.. But in the end, MK got Monkey King and the other valuables back after he regained his Gold Vision. After they got the engine, Monkey King took a break from his meditation, telling MK that the reason he was able to regain his Gold Vison was that it was when he needed it the most. MK had previously believed that his powers were derived from the staff, but Monkey King clarified that the Golden Staff was merely a tool, and it took someone special to wield it. With one power down, Monkey King reminded MK that he still had thousand more to regain.

Amnesia Rules[]
Pigsy was determined to wake up Monkey King from his deep meditative state so he can have him fight the demon. He gave him the Chaos Ultra Ghost Pepper of Doom. The plan worked, but Monkey King lost most of his memories. Monkey King believed that he had successfully scared away the demon before he had the chance to fight it. Monkey King mistook Pigsy, Tang, and Mo for Zhu Bajie, Tang Sanzang, and Sha Wujing, respectively. Thinking that Tang was the one with amnesia, Monkey King urged him to remember and decided to search for the Golden Staff by grabbing a stick. Meanwhile, Pigsy suggested that knocking out Monkey King would restore his memory, but the latter misunderstood and called him "Piglet," causing a tense moment between them. Monkey King asked Tang's permission to beat Pigsy, but Tang attempted to calm everyone down. However, the demon made a sudden reappearance and kidnapped Tang. Monkey King, Pigsy, and Mo banded together to pursue the demon immediately.

Relaxing on his magic cloud, Monkey King admired MK's drawings while helping himself to a few by taken them from Mei. As Sandy announced their arrival to Lantern City, Monkey King noted that Lantern City had remained unchanged. However, as the group went on the sky train, he acknowledged the subtle alterations spurred by the influx of passengers jostling for space around him. Upon reaching their destination, Monkey King disclosed that he had thrown the orange Ring of Samadhi somewhere nearby. Mei queried if he had concealed the ring, to which Monkey King confessed to having buried it deep within the Earth's crust, effectively safeguarding it from everyone. However, Monkey King learned from the Store Owner on how the villagers had stumbled upon the orange Ring of Samadhi, consequently transforming their village into Lantern City and commemorating the event annually through the Ring of Light Festival. The Monkie Kids disapprove as the rings were supposed to be secret, making Monkey King nervously chuckle.
While Tang shared his insight regarding the possible whereabouts of the ring, Monkey King interjected with his own theory, stating that the ring resided within the giant lantern that graced the heart of Lantern City. In an effort to engage Sandy more actively in the search, Monkey King passed him a flyer, urging him to read it given his prolonged silence. MK voiced skepticism about Monkey King's proficiency in reading, to which Monkey King attributed to his stage fright. Upon Sandy's recitation of the flyer's contents, the group discovered an invitation for Lantern City's denizens to compete for the orange Ring of Samadhi in a talent show. After MK delegated roles for the impending performance, Monkey King took the opportunity to share his apprehensions about performing in public to MK. Learning the significance of Monkey King's fears despite his esteemed title, MK proposed a compromise that involved Monkey King playing a gong, a decision that Monkey King sarcastically praised.
During the talent show, the Monkie Kids performed while Monkey King, frozen in fear, struck the gong to end the act after Pigsy's high note. Tang fell into Pigsy's arms after getting the orange ring and warned about Macaque learning about artifacts. The team hurriedly boarded the sky train to flee Lantern City while Monkey King was concerned that Macaque would do anything to obtain the rings.
The King, the Prince, and the Shadow[]
Upon departing from Lantern City on the train, Tang had a burning question for the Monkey King but didn't want to interrupt the tense atmosphere. However, before he could gather the courage to ask, MK took the lead and inquired about how to reforge the Samadhi Fire. Mei noticed the Monkey King's discomfort as he avoided her gaze. The Monkey King explained that they needed to reach the summit of the mystic mountain to reforge the Samadhi Fire. Pigsy, suspicious, interjected by mentioning the discovery of the fourth ring at the summit, which earned him a disapproving look from the Monkey King. Suddenly, their attention was diverted as they witnessed Ne Zha's Fire Ring colliding with the train, causing it to screech to a halt. Ne Zha emerged from the vehicle and launched the Fire Ring towards the train, endangering everyone on board. Utilizing his Gold Vision, Monkey King quickly assessed the situation and promptly ordered everyone to retreat to safety. With his swift actions, Monkey King managed to save everyone from the slicing wheels of the Fire Ring. Monkey King warmly greeted Ne Zha and inquired if he had come for a casual hangout. However, Ne Zha promptly clarified that his purpose of being there was to thwart Monkey King's scheme of reforging the Samadhi Fire. Feeling defensive, Monkey King accused Ne Zha of sneaking a peek at the map while guarding it in order to track him down. He went on to label Ne Zha untrustworthy. Ne Zha explained that he didn't need to resort to such tactics, as he was well aware that the blue Ring of Samadhi was securely entrusted to Chang'e's care until Monkey King pilfered it. Monkey King nonchalantly mentioned that he had merely borrowed the ring. Ne Zha then pointed out that it was hardly surprising that the Demon Bull King kept the green ring for himself, a fact that Monkey King acknowledged by gesturing towards MK and Mei, indicating that they all foresaw this outcome. Ne Zha concluded by remarking on Monkey King's lackluster attempt at concealing the orange ring. MK was threatened by Ne Zha, who demanded the rings. Monkey King delivered a powerful punch that sent Ne Zha soaring into the sky. However, Monkey King knew that this wouldn't deter Ne Zha for long, so he urgently instructed the Monkie Kids to head towards the mystic mountain. He informed MK that once they reunited there, he would provide all the necessary explanations. Despite MK's eagerness to help, Monkey King stressed the urgency of the situation, warning that Macaque could return at any moment. Realizing the limited time they had, Monkey King urged Monkie Kid to leave immediately.
As the Monkie Kids ventured towards the mystic mountain with the Rings of Samadhi, Monkey King created exact replicas of the rings and set off in the opposite direction, diverting the attention of Ne Zha. Monkey King engaged Ne Zha in a fierce battle. Swiftly, Monkey King managed to evade Ne Zha's spear, narrowly escaping its trajectory. Monkey King acknowledged Ne Zha's speed but asserted that his own strength was far superior. The battle raged on. The spear returned to Ne Zha, leaving a small scar on Monkey King's cheek. Ne Zha hurled his spear towards Monkey King again, only for him to skillfully catch it. Utilizing the Armillary Sash, Ne Zha forcefully flung Monkey King towards a towering mountain. Monkey King winced in pain, realizing that Ne Zha had seized the opportunity to snatch the rings from him. Ne Zha boasted about his speed and strength, underestimating Monkey King's wit. Monkey King playfully retorted, implying that Ne Zha lacked intelligence. Suddenly, Macaque, partly encased in crystal, burst forth, launching a barrage of sharp crystal spikes towards both Monkey King and Ne Zha. As Monkey King realized that the situation had gotton worse, the crystal spikes entrapped them against the mountain, vulnerable. However, Monkey King couldn't help but taunt Macaque about his newly acquired Bone Demon powers, sarcastically remarking that it's fitting for him to have a subpar version of everyone else's abilities. Macaque snatched the rings from Ne Zha's hands. Monkey King was confused, wondering why Macaque isn't gloating or boasting before heading off to Lady Bone Demon. Macaque tears the rings apart, revealing that they were actually made of Monkey King's hair. Ne Zha was taken aback, exclaiming that the rings were fake. Monkey King confirmed Ne Zha's statement.
They spot the Monkie Kids starting the ritual. Ne Zha couldn't hide his disbelief at the actions of Monkey King. Monkey King explained that he had instructed the Monkie Kids to wait. However, Macaque, driven by his eagerness to retrieve the rings, started to leave, prompting Monkey King to command him to halt. Monkey King warned Macaque that if any harm came to MK, there would be severe repercussions. Doubtful, Macaque questioned whether Monkey King's involvement would only worsen the situation for MK. Desperately, Monkey King called out to Macaque, urging him to stop, as he had a plan in mind. Despite Monkey King's pleas, Macaque swiftly propelled himself towards the mystic mountain.

Familiar Tales[]
Monkey King and MK were in the process of unpacking the items that MK had brought with him. Monkey King was impressed with the haul, particularly the Universal Ring. Monkey King couldn't help but express his admiration for MK, acknowledging his mastery of his powers at such a young age. Reflecting on his own past, Monkey King admitted to having made regrettable choices, but he also recognized that MK may have already accomplished more for the world than he ever had. MK humbly mentioned instances when he had caused trouble, but Monkey King reassured him that making mistakes is a natural part of life. As long as those mistakes ultimately contribute to leaving the world in a better state, they are acceptable. MK was pleased with the current state of the world and hoped it would remain that way, to which Monkey King reminded him that forever is a long time.
MK and Monkey King organized the items, and eventually, the monkeys informed MK about the Scroll of Memory. Monkey King attempted to warn MK, but unfortunately, the scroll opened. Both Monkey King and MK were startled as they witnessed the emergence of the Ink Demons, who then began to transform into various forms of Monkey King's past encounters. The Ink Demons continued their shapeshifting, eventually taking the form of Ink Ne Zha, who thrust his spear in front of them, intending to imprison them like the monkeys. Shortly after, the Ink Demons transformed into Ink Peng, who used their ji to strike MK, but Monkey King managed to block the attack. Reflecting on his mistakes, Monkey King acknowledged the consequences that had finally caught up with him. As he was impaled, Monkey King urgently urged MK to seal the Scroll of Memory. Within moments, Monkey King was trapped within the confines of the artifact.

Pitiful Creatures[]
After a while, Monkey King heard MK's desperate pleas. Bursting through the scene, Monkey King's witnessed MK being tormented by the protective curse. Without a moment's hesitation, Monkey King raced towards the Golden Staff and launched an attack on the curse, causing it to disintegrate into mere splatters. Acknowledging the delay, Monkey King offered his apologies to MK and reassured him. Despite the challenging circumstances that had affected MK, Monkey King made an effort to uplift his spirits by recognizing his resilience. MK conveyed his perplexity to Monkey King, who, comprehending the gravity of the situation, guaranteed him their efforts in resolving his predicament. The curse greeted Monkey King, acknowledging that the current situation would not have occurred without his involvement. Mei chimed in, emphasizing that their collective efforts were also crucial. As the Monkie Kids arrived, Mei reiterated that their contribution was essential in stopping the curse. Monkey King responded, appreciating the enthusiasm but clarifying that he wasn't the one talking. Tang's fear intensified as he observed the curse's altered form, which differed greatly from their previous encounter. Pigsy asked for the solution to defeat the curse as suggested by Azure. The mention of Azure's name caught Monkey King off guard, leaving him surprised.
The curse cast a shadow over Monkey King and the Monkie Kids' surroundings, creating a barrier that separated them from each other. In the midst of this darkness, the Monkey King called out for MK. However, the curse took on the form of an Ink Monkey King as it confronted the Great Sage. Monkey King was constantly taunted by the curse, which deemed him a pitiful being fated to wreak havoc and devastation upon the world. Monkey King, however, refused to succumb to its words, declaring that he had always been the master of his own destiny. He emphasized that their past actions did not define them, but rather the choices they made in the present moment. In return, Azure Lion summoned radiant beams, enveloping both himself and the Monkie Kids, thereby transporting them back to reality. Regrettably, the Monkey King was abandoned in the Scroll of Memory.
The Emperor's Wrath[]
A Lifetime of Mistakes[]
As Monkey King found himself left behind in the scroll, he continued his determined search to find MK in the expanse of memories. During the search, he stumbled upon recollections of his relentless pursuit of immortality. Overwhelmed by remorse for his callous acts, Monkey King eventually relinquished his pursuit and settled himself at the edge of a cliff, encircled by the swirling memories.
To his astonishment, Monkey King soon discovered that MK and Macaque had ventured into the scroll to rescue him. He confided in MK, revealing the true motivations behind his desire for immortality and the guilt that had plagued him as a result. In response, MK offered words of encouragement to Monkey King, reminding him of his previous declaration that they just have to leave things better than they found them. In a moment of profound significance, MK summoned the Golden Staff and presented it to Monkey King, who gazed upon Macaque and received a gentle smile in return. Filled with renewed determination, Monkey King rose to his feet and firmly grasped the Golden Staff, as they all made their escape from the Scroll of Memory.
The Plan Man[]
In Flower Fruit Mountain, Monkey King proceeded to call a class to order, with the Monkie Kids and Ne Zha in attendance. In response to Ne Zha's question of the presence of a wise master, Monkey King threw a crayon at Ne Zha. Monkey King dismissed Ne Zha's injury and then threatened to throw crayons at anyone else if they persisted in his questioning. Monkey King informed the team of the dangers posed by the Brotherhood, and emphasized the importance of learning to defeat them. He provided insights into each foe's strengths and weaknesses, and assigned MK and himself to deal with Azure. Macaque has intimated that Azure intends to pursue Wukong relentlessly, akin to an unpleasant odor, joking that Monkey King already stinks. Monkey King interjected, asserting his authority by virtue of possessing a crayon and reassuring that he had challenged the Jade Emperor alone and nearly emerged victorious. Ne Zha informed Monkey King that Azure possessed the Scroll of Memory, making their chances of success slim. When Ne Zha deemed taking from the scroll away from Azure impossible, Monkey King threw another crayon at Ne Zha.
The Monkie Kids engaged in a training session under the guidance of Monkey King. Monkey King recounted his past experiences fighting alongside the Brotherhood and the pilgrims. He then proceeded to encourage the Monkie Kids, stating that they possess greater strength than they realize and are all heroes in their own right.
As they were done, Monkey King asserted his superiority as a teacher, claiming to be the greatest in all of history. However, his plan-making skills were criticized by Mei, prompting the Monkey King to acknowledge the need for improvement. He then delegated the task to MK, referring to him as a professional and tossing him a crayon to take charge. MK contemplated the situation and concurred with Ne Zha's assessment that it was evident that Azure was unstoppable with the Power of the Jade Emperor and the Scroll of Memory. Monkey King, however, suggested that he could potentially defeat Azure, but MK dismissed the notion. As MK was done with his plan, Mei acknowledged how in the past they have not had a concrete plan and have relied on improvisation, which would not suffice against the Brotherhood. Mei proposed that they would wait for the right moment to strike, explaining that by not attacking, Azure will assume the team was unprepared, allowing them to catch him off guard.
As the team were gearing up for battle, Monkey King saw how MK was hesitant to use his new monkey form. Monkey King tried to convince him otherwise, but MK was confident in his new armor and believed they can handle the situation without it. However, Monkey King knew that they need to use all of their power to defeat Azure and can't let fear hold them back. Before MK could say anything else, the Brotherhood arrived.
Rip and Tear[]
As the battle commenced, Monkey King went on with the plan to irritate Azure until he relinquished the Scroll of Memory. Monkey King began by playfully questioning whether Azure's proposition for MK to surrender or perish also applied to him. While observing Azure Lion maneuvering the planks of the Scroll of Memory at him, Monkey King interpreted the action as a clear rejection of his plea. After MK rejected the offer, he and Monkey King continued to fight Azure on their magic clouds. In a swift and powerful move, Monkey King delivered a forceful kick that sent Azure Lion soaring across Flower Fruit Mountain. With a touch of mockery, Monkey King taunted Azure, emphasizing the humiliation of being outmaneuvered by two Mystic Monkeys on his very first day as the Jade Emperor. Monkey King then summoned the Golden Staff to crush Azure, allowing him to reunite with the monkeys who were gathering the scattered pieces of the Scroll of Memory.
Azure transformed into a colossal figure, while Monkey King and MK distracted him by constructing the Monkey Mech. This allowed the Party Clone an opportunity to hurl a banana at Azure's face, resulting in an explosion. Monkey King concurred with MK's contentment with the plan's triumph. Monkey King went to recover the Scroll of Memory, but Azure Lion noticed him. With the intention of destroying Monkey King, Azure Lion launched an attack, but MK intervened, blocking the assault. In an attempt to cease the violence, Monkey King pleaded with Azure Lion, and with a quick maneuver, he landed a punch on Azure, causing him to lose balance. Despite the setback, Azure Lion persisted in his attempt to eliminate them, but before he could do so, MK unleashed a powerful beam of energy. Recognizing that MK was transforming into his Mystic Monkey form, Monkey King praised his efforts and cheered him on as he battled Azure Lion. However, he also reminded MK to avoid damaging his belongings. Monkey King soon realized that he still needed to retrieve the scroll.
When Monkey King managed to get the pieces to the scroll again, he saw how to battle between MK and Azure was getting more intense, soon leading to the near destruction of the universe.
Better Than We Found It[]
After successfully retrieving the Scroll of Memory, Monkey King made his way back to the Shuilian Cave, where he urged Azure Lion to avoid another battle. Monkey King acknowledged that the demon had emerged victorious and warned that the universe would soon be destroyed as a result. Azure Lion denied having any intentions of causing such devastation and proposed that he still had a chance to fix things. Azure Lion mentioned his presence in Flower Fruit Mountain, which piqued Monkey King's curiosity. Monkey King couldn't help but question how Azure Lion had managed to escape from the Scroll of Memory given that it was impossible. As Monkey King pondered over this question, became clear to him that someone else did if for him. Determined to uncover the truth, Monkey King asked Azure Lion to know who had bestowed the scroll upon him after freeing him. With a sense of urgency, Monkey King warned Azure Lion that the true culprit had deceived him, using him as a pawn to bring about the destruction of the universe. Upon Azure's decision to undertake the perilous task of restoring the universe, Monkey King bore witness to his demise with great sorrow. However, their sadness was overshadowed by the uncontrollable Power of the Jade Emperor. Ne Zha came up with a plan to seal the force in a desperate attempt to contain it. Once the power was sealed and the Shuilian Cave was restored, the team gathered together. Monkey King worried about MK's safety, but Pigsy roughly pushed him aside.
Monkey King, the Monkie Kids, and Ne Zha gathered at the cliffside of Flower Fruit Mountain, where Ne Zha made a promise to safeguard the Power of the Jade Emperor in the absence of a rightful owner, and to return the Scroll of Memory to the Underworld. Playfully, Monkey King teased Ne Zha about his previous experience in guarding something. After Ne Zha transported himself and Yellowtusk to the Celestial Realm, MK turned to Monkey King and asked if he ever wished for things to remain unchanged. Monkey King remarked that such a notion would be dull, much to the annoyance of Tang.
Monkey King celebrated with the others at a beach party. As MK went to the ocean after putting on sunscreen, Monkey King informs MK to let the sunscreen be absorbed first. Pigsy comments to Monkey King that MK never listens to advice about sunscreen, to which Monkey King agrees by saying that their group doesn't always follow the rules. Seconds later, Monkey King saw that someone was blocking the sun and discerned that it was Macaque. Monkey King retorted sarcastically by thanking him for his uninvited presence. Despite this, he proffered a peach popsicle to Macaque, and they both acknowledged the imminent peril of the universe. Nevertheless, Monkey King resolved to relish the present moment and affirmed that they would confront the situation together.

The Cage[]
Monkey King watched MK grappling to contain the Power of the Jade Emperor, while Li Jing rounded up Monkey King, the Monkie Kids, and Macaque to make their exit from the Celestial Pagoda. Despite Monkey King's protests, MK was left behind, and Li Jing along with Ne Zha attempted to seal the pagoda. However, MK managed to break free, taking the Power of the Jade Emperor with him and astonishing Monkey King and Li Jing by transforming it back into the yellow Color Stone. Li Jing launched an attack on MK, but Monkey King quickly stepped in to protect him. Li Jing retaliated by tightening the circlet around Monkey King, only for MK to intervene once more. Ne Zha then confronted Li Jing, arguing that both parties had noble intentions and emphasizing that MK represented their only hope. He urged Li Jing to trust him, despite always following his lead without question. After some convincing, Li Jing agreed to help, though Pigsy was left wondering what their next move should be. When Ne Zha brought up the Color Stones, Monkey King sheepishly admitted that they didn't have a solid plan for what to do once they collected all the stones, as their main goal had been to keep them out of the mastermind's hands. However, MK revealed that the Four Symbols had given him guidance on their next steps, leading them to the Temple of Nüwa, and before Monkey King and Pigsy could voice their concerns, MK teleported everyone to the temple.
As MK was about to set the Color Stones on Nüwa's statue, Monkey King, Mei, and Tang couldn't shake off their unease about what he was doing. Just when the stones put into place, the Pillar of Heaven was summoned. The Court of the Underworld arrived, warning that only the Harbinger of Chaos had the power to fix the pillar. To the court's shock, the Tenth King mentioned that MK was the Harbinger of Chaos, a claim that left them in disbelief since they thought the figure wouldn't awaken until the end of the Great Cycle. However, the Tenth King revealed the Great Cycle was ending right then and there. He unleashed his chaotic energy, wiping out the other nine kings while Monkey King looked on in fury. Li Jing recognized the Tenth King being a demon in disguise, prompting Monkey King to question who he really was. The Tenth King revealed himself as the Nine-Headed Demon, a being hailing from the Chaos Beyond. In light of the fact that many of the Monkie Kids' foes were either enemies or former allies of Monkey King, MK and Mei were curious if Monkey King had any knowledge of the Nine-Headed Demon. To their surprise, Monkey King insisted he had no recollection of him. The Nine-Headed Demon, however, claimed that he and Monkey King had a deep-rooted history, which left Monkey King more puzzled.
Together with the Monkie Kids, Macaque, Ne Zha, and Li Jing, Monkey King tried to take on the Nine-Headed Demon, but they quickly found themselves overpowered and restrained by his chaotic abilities. The Nine-Headed Demon then disclosed that he was responsible for stealing the Scroll of Memory and deceiving Azure Lion into killing the Jade Emperor, which ultimately led to the weakening of the Pillar of Heaven. He recounted how, in the past, he had attempted to persuade Nüwa's people to accept chaos, only to be labeled a monster instead. This rejection left him feeling trapped in the universe, prompting him to trigger the catastrophic event aimed at destroying the universe, a plan he set in motion by shattering MK's magic stone. The Nine-Headed Demon claimed that his only desire was for MK to have the autonomy to shape his own future, which was embracing the idea of his own sacrifice or not. Macaque was left confused by the mention of a sacrifice, so MK explained that the Pillar of Heaven was still not whole. Monkey King understood that it meant MK would have to give up his life to fix the Pillar of Heaven. Monkey King was adamant that there had to be another way out of this predicament, but the Nine-Headed Demon insisted that only MK's sacrifice could mend the Pillar. As MK prepared to leap towards the Pillar, Monkey King implored him to stop.
