“Hmph, I was expecting a little more pageantry once we were running the show. Turns out, Azure even trapped the cupbearers in the scroll. Pouring one's own drinks does tend to dampen the mood.” |
— Peng[src] |
The Golden-Winged Peng, or Peng for short, is a demon and one of the former sworn brothers of Monkey King.
Official description[]
Graceful, vicious, cold and vain, the evil Peng loves nothing more than battle.[2] |
History[]
Past[]
Peng had once held a position in the Celestial Realm, where they had the opportunity to meet Azure Lion and Yellowtusk. The three of them shared a feast and formed a strong bond.[3] However, Peng's disillusionment with the Jade Emperor's lack of concern for the people led them to defect to the Brotherhood, forming a bond with the Monkey King, the Demon Bull King, Macaque, Azure Lion, and Yellowtusk. With the group led by Monkey King, Peng was inspired to take a stand against the Jade Emperor's rule. During their time in the Brotherhood, Peng developed a strong dislike towards Macaque, viewing him as the most cowardly member of the group. One day they had a feast with them, listening to Monkey King's Havoc in Heaven, and then began discussing overthrowing the Jade Emperor.[4]
Peng fought alongside their sworn brothers in the assault on the Celestial Realm, but their efforts were in vain as Monkey King was unable to overthrow the Jade Emperor. Despite their defeat, Peng did not lose hope and instead joined Azure Lion and Yellowtusk to continue their cause. They established Camel Ridge, a place they could call home.[5] At a meeting held at Camel Ridge, Peng was skeptical regarding Monkey King's loyalty. They firmly believed that Monkey King was a traitor and warned that he would betray them at the first chance he got. Yellowtusk agreed, stating that Monkey King's actions were unpredictable and his true allegiances were uncertain since he joined the Jade Emperor. Peng then questioned Macaque's silence, implying that he should also share his thoughts on the matter. Macaque suggested that they should carefully consider all their options before taking any action. However, Peng was adamant and dismissive of Macaque's suggestion. Peng advocated for taking immediate action to eliminate the perceived threat, emphasizing that they should take Monkey King down while they still possessed the opportunity to do so.[6]
Peng was imprisoned inside the Scroll of Memory along with the remaining Brotherhood in their battle with the pilgrims.[5]
The Brotherhood[]
When Mei tried to attack the Azure Lion after he betrayed them, Peng emerged from the Scroll of Memory and blocked Mei's attack with their wings. After throwing Mei off balance, Peng confronted Tang, assuming him to be Tang Sanzang. Azure Lion intervened, revealing that Tang is not who Peng thinks he is. Peng let go of Tang and reproached Azure for the considerable amount of time it took to release them, emphasizing the feeling of being confined within the Scroll of Memory for a millennium.
After MK witnessed Azure's backstory, Peng advised Azure to refrain from further explanation as MK expressed disbelief, even if he saw it. When Pigsy was confused to why Azure doesn't want to free Monkey King from the scroll, Peng and Yellowtusk declared that they were going to launch another assault in the Celestial Realm to finish the Jade Emperor once and for all. MK tried to take the plank containing Monkey King, Peng intervened and forcefully punched MK, causing the plank to drop to the ground. Peng and Yellowtusk made an attempt to impede MK's efforts to retrieve the plank, however, he was too fast for them and Azure inadvertently caused the plank to be severed into two pieces. As the Brotherhood prepared to leave, Peng raised concerns regarding Azure Lion's decision to spare MK, noticing that MK did not seem like a regular human. In response, Azure noted to Peng that MK was merely another victim of Monkey King. With this understanding, the Brotherhood left Camel Ridge.
Roast of the Monkie Kids[]
Peng and Yellowtusk held Red Son and Princess Iron Fan hostage while Azure tried to convince the Demon Bull King to come back to the Brotherhood. They listened to the conversation, which eventually angered the Demon Bull King to the point where he attacked Peng and Yellowtusk with a powerful blast, freeing his family. After Azure used the Scroll of Memory to trap Princess Iron Fan and the Demon Bull King, Red Son was spared to let the Celestial Realm be warned about the Brotherhood. Yellowtusk noted that the Demon Bull King was their last hope for completing the Brotherhood. This led to Peng to remark that they couldn't find Macaque since he went into hiding.
Later, as Yellowtusk creating a portal to the Celestial Realm, Peng couldn't wait to leave to Camel Ridge since it was in shambles. As Yellowtusk finished, Peng joined their sworn brothers in the Heavenly Realms, where they began to battle Ne Zha, Red Son, and the Celestial Armies for the Jade Emperor title.

The Plan Man[]
Some point prior to pouring their drink, Peng discovered that Macaque and MK had freed Monkey King from the Scroll of Memory.
Peng conveyed a sense of dissatisfaction with the absence of grandeur in their present state of authority. They pointed out that the entire workload had to be managed independently, as Azure's confinement in the Scroll of Memory had resulted in the unavailability of the Celestial Realm's waitstaff. Yellowtusk pointed out Peng that their situation was far from ideal, since Azure's uncontrolled powers were ripping the world apart. Despite Peng's suggestion that the chaos might be beneficial, Yellowtusk stressed the urgency of the situation. Soon Azure Lion arrived, reminiscing about the time when they first feasted together in the Celestial Realm and became great friends. Yellowtusk expressed his concern, saying that there was nothing worth celebrating.
Peng attempted to interject, but Yellowtusk continued, emphasizing that Azure cannot control the immense power at hand. Azure defended his role in saving the world and reminded Peng and Yellowtusk of their imprisonment, but apologized. Peng advised Azure to disregard the heroes' activities and allow them to engage in their hero games. Azure Lion was taken aback to learn of Monkey King's survival, but Peng confirmed MK and Macaque had successfully freed him. Azure Lion acknowledged the hindrance caused by the Monkey King and expressed his determination to destroy him before remaking the world. Despite Yellowtusk's recommendation to prioritize crucial tasks, Azure teleported Peng and the rest of the Brotherhood to confront Monkey King and the Monkie Kids.
Rip and Tear[]
During the battle at Flower Fruit Mountain, Peng mentioned their disdain for Macaque's alliance with the Monkie Kids. They proceeded to block Macaque's staff and questioned Macaque whether there was anything that could make him stop following Monkey King. As Macaque revealed his dislike for Peng, Mei intervened. Mei retaliated Peng with her Dragon Blade, but they blocked her attacks. Peng was surprise at Mei's lack of abilities while mentioning her attitude, given her lineage as a descendant of Ao Lie. Peng continued to battle Mei and Macaque until they all saw the beam of light behind them. This prompted Peng to inquire about the occurrence. Shortly thereafter, they were all witness to the fragmentation of the universe.
Better Than We Found It[]
As the universe was about to be destroyed, Peng prepared to leave, only to be briefly stopped by Mei, who called Peng selfish. Conversely, Macaque insisted on letting Peng go, calling them a coward the same way Peng called him before. Aggravated, Peng attempts to charge at Macaque, but the latter summoned the Smoke Monster, intimidating Peng. Because of this, Peng retreated, abandoning their brothers.
Personality[]
- “Peng is the most dangerous foe any of you have ever faced, but the only thing they care about more than fighting is self-preservation. The moment the battle looks like it's turning against them, they'll flee.”
- ―Monkey King [src]
Peng stands out as an exceptionally dangerous demon, known for their insatiable thirst for violence. They relish in the idea of their adversaries unleashing their full might during confrontations.[7] What sets Peng apart is their deep-seated disdain for those who display cowardice or betray the Brotherhood,[6] viewing them with utter contempt. Interestingly, despite the Brotherhood's noble mission to create a better world, Peng's motivations for joining seem to be rooted in a desire for power and authority within the organization. Their hunger for recognition and admiration becomes evident as they expect fame and glory upon conquering the Celestial Realm, completely disregarding the catastrophic state of the universe. Furthermore, Peng's malicious and haughty disposition is accentuated by their contemptuous disregard for the valiant endeavors of the Monkey King and the Monkie Kids, perceiving their actions as mere theatrics devoid of significance.[8]
Peng cares deeply about their sworn brothers, but they prioritize their own security and well-being even more highly. This means that if they are in a dangerous situation, they would put their own needs before those of their comrades, even if it means leaving them behind.

Macaque[]

Behind the Scenes[]
- In the sets, they're referred to as the "Golden-Winged Eagle".
- Peng and the Azure Lion's roles are switched from their Journey to the West counterparts, as Peng was the leader of the demon trio while the Azure Lion was a follower.[9]
- Peng also takes the role of the Peng Demon King, one of the Monkey King's six sworn brothers.
- In the novel, Peng is known as the "Golden Winged Great Peng". They, like their brothers, were once a member of Heaven. They were the Buddha's god-uncle through their sister the peacock Mahamayuri. After being defeated by the Buddha, they returned to perch above his throne.
- Peng's actress, Meli Grant's performance was inspired by the late Chris Ayres' voice work as Frieza in Dragon Ball Z.[10] Her performance is also partially inspired by Zarbon from Dragon Ball Z.[11]
- After seeing discussions about it online Peng's actress said that, while she doesn't know if Peng is canonically transgender, she loves the headcanon.[12]
- In "The Emperor's Wrath", Peng is consistently addressed using they/them pronouns, whereas they had only been referred to by name in the earlier episodes and the LEGO® Builder description for 80046 Monkie Kid's Cloud Airship used he/him pronouns.[13]
- Grant was not aware during the recording process that Peng used they/them, and was under the impression they were a male character. [14]
- It is also possible Peng's pronouns were changed after the initial recording sessions.[15]
Trivia[]
- Peng's namesake and specified species in mythology: Dapeng, is a mythological giant bird.
- Unlike Azure Lion and Yellowtusk, Peng is the only member of the reforged Brotherhood not to have a brick-built model of themselves in the Wave 6 and 7 sets.
