- Note: Due to Monkie Kid not being a direct representation to Journey to the West,[1] this article will be primarily about the pilgrims' appearance within Monkie Kid. For more information on each of the characters, click here.
The pilgrims were a group of heroes who went on a Journey to the West.
History[]
Journey to the West[]
Over five-hundred years ago, the group was formed when Tang Sanzang had to take sacred texts to the West, along with Monkey King, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Ao Lie. During the journey, the disciples had to protect Tang Sanzang from demons that planned to eat him and become immortal.

One day, the pilgrims learned of the Samadhi Fire, a rare fire that can't be put out. The pilgrims, along with Ne Zha and the Demon Bull King, removed the fire from Red Son and placed them in the three Rings of Samadhi. But because of Monkey King's impulsiveness, a part of the fire was sealed in Ao Lie.

Trivia[]

- The pilgrims' designs seem to take inspiration from both Journey to the West (1986) and Journey to the West (1996), with Sha Wujing and Tang Sanzang pulling from the '86 series and Zhu Bajie from the '96 incarnation.
- A small incense shrine with folded paper versions of the pilgrims can be seen when Monkey King invites MK to watch the fireworks in "Revenge of the Spider Queen".
- Before Season 4 aired, the characters in the show theorized Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy to be the reincarnations of Zhu Bajie, Tang Sanzang, and Sha Wujing respectively due to their similarities. As of "The Brotherhood", Pigsy and Sandy were categorized as the descendants of Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, much like Mei and Ao Lie. Tang Sanzang's relation with Tang remains uncertain, yet some characters believe that Tang Sanzang is Tang's previous incarnation.[2][3]
- Along with Mei, the three are also possess the memories of the pilgrims, as the Monkie Kids aside from MK, since he isn't related to Monkey King.[4] As they had recollections of the mystic mountain when they first arrived there.[5] Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy, all also appeared as Zhu Ganglie, Tang Sanzang, and Sha Wujing respectively when trapped within the Scroll of Memory, unlike Mei, who appears alongside her pilgrim equivalent.
- Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing are specified to be the past lives of Tang, Pigsy, and Sandy in Mandarin dub, and the Wave 7 sets.
