βIn order to contain its prisoners, a powerful protective curse was cast upon the scroll to prevent those imprisoned from escaping and ensare any who would seek to free those locked inside, trapping them forever. Left unchecked, that curse would have spread, consuming everything until nothing remained.β |
— Azure Lion[src] |
The protective curse was a sentient curse that was cast onto the Scroll of Memory to prevent its prisoners from escaping.
History[]
Past[]

The Kings of the Underworld imbued the Scroll of Memory with the protective curse, which became linked to all of the scroll's Melanokinesis, including the ability to imprison victims and control Ink Demons. The curse was meant to safeguard the memories of the scroll and prevent any escape attempts for as long as the curse remained in effect. However, due to the scroll being unsecured since its theft, the curse's purpose was amplified, causing it to ensnare not only the prisoners but also anyone from the real world who came into contact with it. This led the scroll to become a dangerous weapon rather than a prison like it was intended.[1][2]
Court of the Yellow Robed Demon[]
As the protective curse found the Monkie Kids, it took on the form of Ink Yellowtusk and attempt to attack MK with its mallet. Mei tried to block the hit with the Dragon Blade, but the protective curse destroyed it as it knocked the Monkie Kids back, resulting in the heroes being separated from each other.
Show Me the Monster[]
Upon reaching Flower Fruit Mountain beneath MK's stone, the curse undergoes a metamorphosis, taking the shape of Ink MK in its monkey form, prepared to confront MK.
Pitiful Creatures[]
MK was struggling with the curse as it relentlessly questioned MK's destiny and held him responsible for all that had happened. The curse had taken on the form of the Demon Bull King, the Spider Queen, the Lady Bone Demon, and the Monkey King, all at the same time. It warned MK that while he was similar to Wukong, his actions would lead to even greater destruction, making him seen as a monster that would bring about the end of the world. The curse did not spare any effort to distress MK as he began to tap into his monkey form. Monkey King intervened and managed to temporarily destroy the curse. However, it quickly regenerated and was soon met with the Monkie Kids.
The curse separated the group, summoning Ink Demons to communicate with them while preparing to take down Monkey King and the Monkie Kids. The curse argued that they were all destined to bring about the end of the world, and Monkey King's speech about defying fate and making their own choices fell on deaf ears. The curse reminded Monkey King about his past to further demoralize the group. Despite the curse's attempts to sow doubt and fear onto the heroes, the Monkie Kids and Monkey King stood their ground and weakened the curse with their weapons, causing it to revert back to Ink MK.
However, the curse continued to taunt MK, saying that his friends would turn against him, and he would be perceived as a monster by everyone as Lady Bone Demon said before. Finally, MK had enough and transformed into his Mystic Monkey form, destroying the curse, but not before the curse challenged MK to prove himself wrong.
Personality[]
- Azure Lion: βRemember how I told you the scroll has a protective curse?β
- MK: βAnd that it'll try to find and destroy us. Uh-huh, yeah. Wasn't really gonna forget that part.β
Because of its purpose to torment the Scroll of Memory's prisoners for their past misdeed, the protective curse possessed a twisted mind, mocking its enemies as they tried to get into their head. While taking on a form of someone's deepest shame, the protective curse often referred to itself in plural to emphasize its victims' guilt.
Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Ink Demon Physiology - The protective curse possessed all of the traits of an Ink Demon.
- Shapeshifting - The protective curse could shapeshift to change its form.
- Power Replication - The protective curse could replicate the powers of what form it took, as seen with when it took the form of Ink MK.
- Hive Mind - The Ink Demons were under the control of the protective curse, which functioned as a collective consciousness for them. The curse commanded them mentally until it was eradicated. Once destroyed, the Ink Demons became susceptible to the influence of whoever possessed the Scroll of Memory.[3] Additionally, the Ink Demons served as extensions of the protective curse, taking on the appearance of the Ink Pilgrims and it amalgamation form during its confrontation with Monkey King and the Monkie Kids simultaneously.

Quotes[]
- Protective curse: βWhat's the matter, guy?β
- MK: βNothing. I justββ
- Protective curse: βHey, nah, I get it, man. You wanna get back to our Monster of the Week Adventures? To get back to our simple missions with Mei, mastering all Monkey King's powers and delivering noodles for Pigsy, right?β
- MK: βYeah. Yeah, actually that's exactly what I wannaββ
- Protective curse: βBut we can't! Not after all we've seen. All we know and all we don't. Right, friend?β
- —The protective curse meeting MK again since their last encounter
- βSure, I am. I'm your best friend. Well, closest at least. I know more about you than you'll even admit. To yourself or to others.β
- ―The protective curse
- βYo, where you goin', guy?β
- ―The protective curse
- MK: βYou're not real. You're just the curse of the scroll trying to get all up inside of my head, just likeββ
- Protective curse: βThe Lady Bone Demon?β
- —The protective curse being compared to Lady Bone Demon
- βTell me, what do you think we are? Honestly. 'Cause I have been dying to hear us say it. Out loud.β
- ―The protective curse
- βOh. You mean, these powers?β
- ―The protective curse
- βSeriously? You still think we're just some... "noodle delivery guy"? You can't remember where we came from, and we got all this power, and you never once thought, why us? What are we?! What is our purpose?!β
- ―The protective curse
- βYeah, well, we all know exactly where that leads, don't we?β
- ―The protective curse
- βAre you sure about that? Last I checked, all of this happened because of us. We said it ourselves. We released the Demon Bull King from the Underworld. We gave the Spider Queen the means to dominate the city, and we gave the Lady Bone Demon the opportunity to wreak havoc on the world.β
- ―The protective curse
- Protective curse: βWe're just like Wukong. A fraud, a trickster, destructive. Why would our legacy be any different? Actually, no, no. The chaos and destruction that we'll bring upon the world will make Wukong's past look like nothing. Shifu Subodhi said it himself, right?β
- MK: βNo. No, you're wrong. I'm-I'm... I'm notββ
- Protective curse: βNot what? Some monkey demon thing destined to bring chaos upon the world? Come on! Use your words, big brain boy. Say it! What are we?β
- —The protective curse telling MK about his impending future
- βYeah, boi! Oh, that's what I'm talking about! You can't escape it. This thing, whatever you are, embrace it. Embrace your destiny!β
- ―The protective curse
- βHey, nice of you to join us, bud. You know, none of this would happen without you, right?β
- ―The protective curse
- βSay goodbye!β
- ―The protective curse
- βSuch pitiful creatures. Cowardly. Reckless. Monstrosities! All doomed to play a role in tearing this world apart. To cause nothing but chaos and destruction.β
- ―The protective curse
- βNice hero speech, bud, but I know better. Deep in your hearts, you don't believe a word of that.β
- ―The protective curse
- βYou can see it, can't you? This is your fate. Your friends will turn on you, seeing you for the monster you will become. They will destroy you, Harbinger of Chaos. It's just like the Lady Bone Demon said. Despite your efforts, all you'll ever do is cause pain and suffering.β
- ―The protective curse
- βThen prove us wrong.β
- ―The protective curse's final words
