“Everything that has ever happened, every deed, every word has been recorded in the Scroll of Memory. It's a prison, designed to contain wicked souls, forcing them to relive their past misdeeds over and over again for all eternity.” |
— The Azure Lion[src] |
The Scroll of Memory is an ancient artifact created from magical bamboo planks from the Underworld. It was designed to be a prison for its captives as they were forced to relive their past misdeeds. However, the Nine-Headed Demon stole it and gave it to Azure Lion, starting his plan to destroy the universe. Meanwhile, many people were unfairly locked up in the scroll. After the final standoff with the Brotherhood, the innocent prisoners were freed while the scroll was returned to its original position in the Underworld.
History[]
Past[]
In the Underworld, magical planks were crafted to serve as a means of punishment, trapping beings within and forcing them to relive their past sins. These planks were then assembled to create the Scroll of Memory. To ensure that no one could escape or tamper with the memories contained within, the Court of the Underworld placed a protective curse upon the scroll.[1][2]
Following the assault on the Celestial Realm, the pilgrims used the scroll to imprison the Brotherhood.[3] However, centuries later, the Nine-Headed Demon, in a bid to unleash chaos upon the universe, stole the Scroll of Memory and entrusted it to Azure Lion after freeing him from it. Eventually, the scroll found its way into the possession of the Monkey King through unknown means, finding its resting place at Flower Fruit Mountain.[1]
Destiny Fulfilled[]
The Scroll of Memory was placed on top of a rock, far behind MK and Monkey King, as it unrolled itself.
Familiar Tales[]
When MK and Monkey King were organizing the Treasure Room, MK saw the Scroll of Memory as the monkeys surrounded it. MK asked Monkey King about the scroll as he unrolled it, summoning the Ink Demons as they took form of Monkey King's past encounters. As Ink Ne Zha and Ink Peng were summoned, they both attacked Monkey King and the monkeys with their weapons, imprisoning them inside the Scroll of Memory.
New Adventures[]
Sandy found the Scroll of Memory, which opened up and unleashed a wave of Ink Demons on the Monkie Kids. MK and Mei barely escaped before Azure Lion came in to save them and seal the ink within the scroll. He helped them go in safely to find their friends after giving a brief about the item.
Pitiful Creatures[]
Monkey King had been tearing through the scroll to find MK, which constantly brought him back to a stone, creating tears in the sky where he had ripped through the memories.
With the protective curse destroyed, cracks were created across the sky and landscape. Soon after that, Azure Lion pulled the Monkie Kids out of the scroll, leaving Monkey King behind.
The Brotherhood[]
Azure Lion briefly used the scroll against Mei, freeing Peng and Yellowtusk, who attacked the Monkie Kids until Azure told them to stop.
To explain everything, Azure Lion took MK inside the Scroll of Memory with him as he told MK about his past with Monkey King and what happened to the Brotherhood. When he was done, Azure Lion explained that he can't free Monkey King from the Scroll of Memory until he kills the Jade Emperor, infuriating MK as he tried to take the plank that had Monkey King from Azure Lion.
MK was close to getting the slip, but Azure Lion panicked, unintentionally cutting the plank in two as the Monkie Kids and the Brotherhood felt remorse. Azure Lion took the broken slip back, threatening that he would destroy it if the Monkie Kids intervened again.
Roast of the Monkie Kids[]
Azure Lion used the Scroll of Memory to capture Demon Bull King and Princess Iron Fan when his former sworn brother refused to join the rest of the Brotherhood in the second assault on the Celestial Realm.
The Jade Emperor[]
Azure Lion used the Scroll of Memory to aid in taking down and trapping members of the Celestial Armies. Unbeknownst to him when the Monkie Kids and Ne Zha escaped, MK had snatched up the pieces containing Monkey King.
A Lifetime of Mistakes[]
Tang and Sandy taped up the pieces and Tang sent MK and Macaque into it to find Monkey King.
The Plan Man[]
After Yellowtusk confronted him about his inability to control the Jade Emperor's power, Azure Lion became furious at his audacity to dare question him and pulled out the Scroll of Memory to remind Yellowtusk that without him, he would still have been trapped within it.
Pieces of the scroll swirled around his body when he appeared before the defiant Monkie Kids, Macaque, and Monkey King.
Rip and Tear[]
Azure Lion used the Scroll of Memory to attack MK and Monkey King. He scattered the pieces after he realized they had collected them, which Monkey King and his monkeys had to regather again afterwards.
Better Than We Found It[]
Monkey King flew over to Azure Lion to ask him about the scroll and his involvement.
After the battle, Ne Zha freed everyone that was imprisoned by Azure and returned the Scroll of Memory to the Underworld, hoping that it wouldn't be misused again.
Appearance[]
The Scroll of Memory is dark blue and made of bamboo slips, it has pale blue lining and tassels. The writing is gold and written in oracle bone script.
Relations with the protective curse[]
When the protective curse was destroyed by MK, the people trapped within Scroll of Memory could now be freed by an outside force. The ink was also controllable, allowing Azure Lion to use it as a weapon against his enemies.

Interference with the memories | ||
Pre-destruction | Originally, the Scroll of Memory traps prisoners as they are forced to relive memories as punishment for their misdeeds. In this case, they take the place of their memory counterparts while others can interact with those memories. According to Azure, significant alterations were prohibited from occurring in the memories if the prisoners possess any inaccuracies to the memory's timeline. | ![]() |
Post-destruction | While the users can still enter the scroll, they are now able to see the memories from a third-person perspective instead of reliving them as they did before. | ![]() |
Broken slip | When MK and Macaque entered the broken scroll, the memories repeated over and over again, dissipating when interacted with. Projections of the memories played at random, flashing around Monkey King. | ![]() |
Ink Demons | ||
Pre-destruction | Having been placed in the Scroll of Memory by the Court of the Underworld, the protective curse was linked to the Ink Demons as acted as a hive mind for them, giving them mental commands under its influence and using them as extensions. | ![]() |
Post-destruction | The duties of the curse conferred on the wielder of the scroll, allowing them to have full control over the Ink Demons while also being able to free the captives of the scroll at any time, something that was not possible with the curse, as it prevented prisoners from escaping from the scroll as long it was intact, and even trapped those who attempted to free them. | ![]() |

Powers[]
- Melanokinesis - The Scroll of Memory can create ink, which is mainly used to summon the Ink Demons.
- Memory Imprisonment - The Scroll of Memory can imprison beings to make them relive the events recorded in a specific plank of the scroll, unable to escape as long as the protective curse remained intact. Following the curse's destruction, those who travel through it can see the memories in a third person perspective, watching passively, instead of just reliving the memories, as Azure Lion was able to do so while explaining his backstory to MK.[3]

- According to Ashe Jacobson, time works differently in the Scroll of Memory than in real life.[4]
- The slips of the scroll resemble calligraphy inksticks.
- In the set 80048 The Mighty Azure Lion, the scroll also acts as a gatling gun, similar to its usage in "Rip and Tear".
- The scrolls detailing was originally red instead of light blue.[5]
