“Zhu Bajie had his vices. However, like all the companions, he grew up. He struggled the most, but he worked hard, not unlike yourself. Although he didn't start out this way, in time, he became a deeply caring and protective creature. And a powerful ally. One of the best in fact.”
Master Subodhi[src]

Zhu Bajie, also known as Zhu Ganglie, was one of Tang Sanzang's three disciples.

History[]

Past[]

Zhu Ganglie was a Celestial Realm agent who possessed a unique rake.[3] However, he was assigned to the Mortal Realm, where he aspired to become the most renowned chef in China. In his pursuit of culinary excellence, he frequently resorted to abducting humans to use as ingredients in his dishes.[4]

Journey to the West[]

Zhu Ganglie met the pilgrims during their Journey to the West when they came to his restaurant for a meal.[5] To make up for his immoral acts, Zhu Bajie became a disciple to Tang Sanzang and went with him and Monkey King on their journey, protecting the Great Monk from demons that wanted to eat him for immortality.

During the journey, he and Monkey King battled against Sha Wujing.[2] Zhu Bajie and the other pilgrims heard about the Samadhi Fire and watched as Monkey King, Ne Zha, and the Demon Bull King extracted the flame and contained it in the Rings of Samadhi. After the ritual, Zha Bajie congratulated Tang Sanzang for succeeding, unaware of Monkey King's mistake.[6]

The pilgrims encountered Lady Bone Demon, whose intention was to rid the Mortal Realm of suffering and flaws by obliterating it and establishing a fresh one. Thanks to Monkey King's assistance, they managed to overcome her, leading to Lady Bone Demon's incarceration in the Bone Demon Crypt.[7]

Zhu Bajie, alongside the rest of the pilgrims, received a mission from the Celestial Realm to destroy Camel Ridge and thwart the plans of the Brotherhood. Through their collective strength, they succeeded in trapping the sworn brothers within the Scroll of Memory.[3]

Legacy[]

Zhu Bajie's legacy was carried on by Monkey King, who had his companions depicted on a mural on the Shuilian Cave, and created a video game that had Zhu Bajie during the time he was before a pilgrim.[8][9]

Since Monkey King's mistake of thinking that Pigsy was Zhu Bajie when he had amnesia, Pigsy began to have a theory of him actually being Zhu Bajie, mainly due to the Monkie Kids' similarities to the pilgrims'. However, when Pigsy discovered that Zhu Bajie was a demon and learned that he was actually related to him, he expressed hatred towards Zhu Bajie,[10] fearing that he would be seen as a monster by others until Master Subodhi told Pigsy about Zhu Bajie's redemption during the Journey to the West.[11]

Personality[]

Before the journey, Zhu Bajie wasn't much of a good chef as he didn't know the chef's code, and was also cruel, and irritable. But when he met Sun Wukong and the others, he became a caring, protective, and powerful friend.
